About Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship 2022

The Government of India has launched  the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship Scheme  to improve the quality of research in various higher educational institutions in the country. Through this scheme attractive fellowships are offered to research fellows to attract the best talent in research. The government has announced this scheme in the budget of 2018-19. Students from IITs, IISCRs, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru and some of the top Central Universities/NITs awarding science or technology degrees will be covered under this scheme. The performance of selected students under this scheme will be reviewed through a national conference.

Purpose of Prime Minister Research Fellowship

 The main objective  of the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship is to provide  Ph.D. to provide financial assistance. So that they can carry out research in an effective and efficient manner. This financial assistance will be provided by the Government of India. This scheme will motivate the students to make a career in research. Benefits and Features of Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship

  • The Government of India has launched  the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship Scheme  to improve the quality of research in various higher educational institutions in the country.

Fellowship under Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship

In addition to this scholarship, each fellow will get a research grant of Rs 2 lakh per year for five years. The Fellow will receive a research grant of Rs 10 lakh for a period of five years. The tenure of the scholarship will be till the end of the fourth year of the Ph.D. For students of integrated courses and Ph.D. by the end of the fifth year. For B.Tech or equivalent. For students selected through lateral entry channels, the scholarship will continue until the student remains in the doctoral programme. There will be no retrospective payment. Industry participation in PMRF program to be explored through CSR funding to enable industry to sponsor Fellows

Deliverables under the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship

  • Each partner will get deliverables at the time of joining which need to be achieved every year
  • These deliverables will be assigned by the guide and the department the fellow is attending
  • The deliverables will be designed keeping in mind the theme chosen by the partner
  • There should be an annual review of PMRF Fellows every year
  • If the review committee has found the fellow’s performance satisfactory, the fellowship will continue for the next year as well.

Amendments under the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship Scheme

  • Students of any university can apply under the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship. Earlier only students of select institutes could apply
  • Earlier the GATE score was 750 which has now come down to 600. It is done
  • As per the new guidelines, there will be two channels of entry which is direct entry and lateral entry
  • Under Lateral Entry, students who are pursuing Ph.D. from PMRF granting institutions and have completed at least 12 months or 24 months, as required, can also apply to become a Fellow under the Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship Scheme.
  • All those National Institutes of Technology that fall in the top 25 institutions in the ranking of the National Institutes Ranking Framework can also become Prime Minister Research Fellowship awarding institutions

Eligibility Criteria for Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship Scheme

  • Applicant should be pursuing final year of 5-year integrated M.Tech or 2-year MSc or 5-year undergraduate or postgraduate dual degree program from IISc / IIT / NIT / IISER / IIEST in Science and Technology stream 4-5 years undergraduate and centrally funded IIITs. Qualified candidate must have secured a CGPA or CPI of at least 8.0 on a 10-point scale. All those candidates who are in 5 years integrated dual degree programs, if they are provided with separate CGPA for UG and PG parts of the programme, CGPA of UG part for first four years will be considered.

Candidate should have completed 4 or 5 years Graduation or 5 years Integrated M.Tech or 5 years Integrated MSc or 2 Years Integrated MSc OR Final year of five years Undergraduate or Post Graduate dual degree program in Science and Technology stream from any other University or Institute would have completed. Recognized in India. Candidate must have secured a minimum CGPA of 8 or equivalent in addition to a minimum score of 650 in the respective GATE subject

Candidate must have qualified GATE or pursuing or have completed M.Tech/MS by research in one of the grating institutes having minimum CGPA of 8.0 to CPI of 8.0 at the end of first semester with at least four courses. For candidates who are applying after the first semester, the CGPA or CPI requirement of 8.0 will be based on all the courses, labs, thesis that the candidate has completed.

  • They should have applied for PhD program in 1 of PMRF grant institute and got selected in the program
  • The institution which has admitted the student to the PhD program should make a strong recommendation and upload the relevant information on the web portal. Students can get direct admission in the institute where he/she has been selected and wants to take admission
  • Metrics on which the candidate will be judged include research performance, publications, performance in international competitions, grades and letters of recommendation.
  • The candidate’s progress will be reviewed by the panel within 12 to 18 months of admission to the PhD program and the continuation of the fellowship will be subject to satisfactory performance of the candidate.
  • Candidate is required to submit strong research proposal
lateral entry channel
  • Candidate should be pursuing PhD in PMRF granting institution
  • He should have completed at least 12 months in PhD program if he has joint PhD program after master’s degree and must have completed at least 24 months in PhD program if he joined PhD program after bachelor’s degree Is
  • Duration will be counted from the date of admission to PhD program till the date of application for lateral admission
  • Each candidate will be considered at least twice through lateral entry channel
  • If the course is integrated M.Tech, MSc and Ph.D the candidate will be eligible to apply within 12 months from the date of completion of the requirement of Master’s degree.
  • Candidate must have completed at least four courses in PhD program and obtained at least 8.5 CGPA or higher
  • The institution where the student is enrolled should make a strong recommendation for the candidate and upload all relevant information on the web portal including the research proposal in soft copies of the publications.
  • Transfer to another institution is not allowed
  • Candidate cannot be considered for direct admission channel in subsequent year
  • The metrics on which the candidate will judge should include a strong research proposal, publications, record and grades

Procedure to apply under Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship Scheme

  • Candidate is required to apply for regular PhD program in PMRF grant institute
  • If you get selected and your candidature is found by answer and the institute will nominate you
  • You must have been selected in the PhD program at the beginning of the current semester
  • You can only be considered in lateral entry mode if you were previously selected in a PhD program
  • Enrollment does not guarantee and accept the fellowship
  • After the nomination, the expert panel will look at the nomination and decide
  • There is no central portal through which you can directly apply for admission
  • To get the benefit of this scheme, you have to go through one of the institutes and take admission in their PhD program.
  • Once the committee receives your nomination you will receive a link to submit your application
  • You will also be asked to submit your academic background with transcripts, details of research experience or internship, CV, research proposal or statement of purpose, list of publications and references.
  • There will be no reservation quota under the scheme
  • The last date for receipt of nominations from the institute is 15 January 2022
